A country known mostly for it’s natural resource industries and all around hilliness, Hillsboro is an unsurprisingly bland and unimportant nation. Ruled by King Fredrock Kesselgease (N male dwarf, aristocrat 7/expert 5), the nation is sparsely populated and attracts the occasional gold rush every few decades, only to see many people leave empty-handed.
The country has garnered an undeserved reputation for being generally unlucky, with fires breaking out at the capital of Dunshaven on several occasions for various unrelated reasons. Perhaps if they didn’t make the whole city out of logs…
Industries
Mining is the lifeblood of the Hillsboro economy. Other natural resources such as timber represent most of the rest of it.
Life and Society
Hillsboro is a very sparsely populated land and survival depends on wilderness skills. Though not as dangerous as living in say Sevetrock, it can still be tough.
Government and Politics
The mayors of the various cities essentially form a loose council to the king. Governance is extremely decentralized, with the King generally delegating the day to day operations to his mayors.
Power Groups
The King’s Army unites the country, and makes certain that taxes are collected on time. The mayors have their own smaller militias and there are few bands of brigands who wander over the border from Sevetrock.
Religion
Terraion (LN) has a small following here, but even many dwarves seem more interested in material things such as gold.
Major Settlements / Important Sites
Dunshaven: The capital of Dunshaven is really the only remotely important city in the country. Interestingly, the King’s castle is not anywhere near the city, possibly due to the questionable construction of the city.
Some of the old abandoned gold mines are rumoured to have new tenants. The gold mines that are still active are the main asset of the King.
Adventuring In Hillsboro
Don’t fall for the same trap that many of the unlucky folks who inhabit these hills fell for. There’s no more gold in these hills. The dwarves of Hillsboro are shunned by their cousins in most other parts of Calbion. I wonder why?
