Teleportation Gates can be found in several major cities. They are usually operated by the Mages Guild, and in general cost anywhere from several hundred, to thousands depending on the distances between gates. A Teleportation Gate functions as the spell, Teleportation Circle, and in fact looks like the spell, placed on a raised platform surrounded by rune-covered pillars.
A mage capable of using the spells Teleport, Scry, and Sending is officially required to operate the gate, although one with Teleport, Greater, or even Teleportation Circle is generally preferred over less experienced operators. Considering even some of the highest ranked members of the Mages Guild are not capable of Teleportation, Greater much less Teleportation Circle, most operators are rather under qualified. Most operators are those able to activate those spells from magic items.
Mishaps are extremely rare. There have been extraordinarily rare rumours of people and goods being sent to the wrong gate, materializing a bit off-target or even failing to materialize at all, and the Mages Guild does its best to quash these rumours and the effects they have on their business.
It is said that gate technology actually predates airship and levitation stone technology considerably. However, while the Mages Guild maintains the gates, new gates have not been constructed in hundreds of years, and some have even been lost into obscurity. They are said to have been more popular in the days of the Dorian Empire and before the Elven Diaspora.
